More events, More Resources & Discount to UXVN Conference to End The Year
Happy December, you amazing designers!
We can't believe how fast 2020 has flown by! As the year comes to a close, our team at Students of UXD would like to extend a deep and heartfelt thank you for being a part of our community. We officially launched in October and never would have thought that we would be making such a huge impact in just 2 short months! Every day, we continue to be in awe of our growth and the inspirational community that we have created—together.
From us at Students of UXD, happy holidays and have a great new year! We have SO MUCH MORE to come in 2021 that we can't wait to share with you all, so keep your eyes peeled! Let's make 2021 our year! 🎊 🥂 🎆
As we close this unique year with a joyous season, we want to share our happiness and would love for you to be a part of it with our fundraiser.
🧸 2020 Students of UXD "Gift of Joy" Fundraiser
At Students of UXD, we are passionate about community and always strive to give back. With COVID-19, the rise of unemployment rates, and other unfortunate events that have occurred this year, fewer children will be able to experience the joy of Christmas.
This is why this year, we are announcing our first-ever Students of UXD "Gift of Joy" Fundraiser! With your help, 100% of all proceeds will go to Toys for Tots before Christmas (an estimate of 40+ toys!). We hope that we can come together, recognize the privilege that we may have in our current situations, and give back to children in need.
How can you help? There are 2 ways to get involved:
👉 Give $8 and receive a Students of UXD sticker (USA only, while supplies last), OR
👉 Make a donation of any amount (open to USA and internationally)
The fundraiser runs from now until December 19th! Hurry and donate ASAP to place a smile on a child's face this holiday season! 🥰

☝ UX + Racism: Designing a New Narrative
Anthropologists like Audrey and Brian Smedley and Isabel Wilkerson have written profound works about race in America, but how does this relate to UX?
Join us with our next speaker, Vincent Brathwaite, as he explores the question of "How might we dismantle the narrative of race in the US?". We will hear and discuss Brathwaite's thoughts on this topic, while bringing in a UX lens as to how we might understand and change the narrative of the racism that still exists today. In this way, we are able to create a more positive world around us through more disruptive and inclusive design thinking.
Vincent is a Caribbean American multi-disciplinary design leader, educator, and speaker. He is an adjunct professor at Rhode Island School of Design and you may have seen him in The Futur channel with Chris Do before. For the past two decades, he has worked to transform communities through disruptive design thinking. Driven by integrity, empathy, kindness, courage, and resilience, his mission is to design experiences that help leaders positively impact the world.

✌ Designing for the Ten Percent: How to Unbias your Designs
What do biases look like in design? What are "10 percent restraints"? These questions and more will be discussed at our next speaker event, Designing for the Ten Percent: How to Unbias your Designs, with Jasmine Orange! Jasmine will be joining us to discuss what biases in design look like and what the consequences can be when someone doesn’t recognize that bias can greatly change your design process and outcome: from lack of usability to even potential harm. We will talk about how “edge cases” or “10% restraints” are more common than we even realize. We will also discuss what happens when designers remove those biases and what great good can be done when designing for the 10%.
Jasmine is a UX Designer based in Atlanta, GA with a passion for design, diversity, and creating experiences that are pleasant for all people. She is currently a UX Designer for Ernst & Young. Jasmine is also a grad student, working on getting her Masters in HCI. She is a member of UXHelpers and IxDA, as well as other community-centric design meetups. In her free time, Jasmine enjoys traveling the world, rock climbing, reading, video games, spending time with her dog, Mugen, and obsessing over K-Pop sensation, BTS.
